In communication other than by written documents, it was hitherto impossible to sign a message M from A to B in a way that its presentation by B would constitute proof positive that it originated with A. The Signature Machine (SIM) enables A to affix a signature sigma(A) (M) to M so that B cannot forge messages signed by A, and A cannot disown a message signed by him.
