In many applications it is desirable to provide hardware in which the input or output of data into or out of storage is accomplished by "cycle-stealing." Control for synchronizing the input and output of data with the processing of data is normally provided by program control, where initialization occurs with an input/output (I/O) instruction and termination occurs by the expiration of a byte count, at which time an interrupt occurs or a flag is set.
