Graduated step seals are normally employed in bonding PYREX* to quartz,
which requires an experienced glass blower.
The method here described enables the user to bond PYREX and quartz by
epoxy bonding the parts regardless or the problem that quartz has a thermal
expansion of 32.5 x 10/-7/cm/cm/degrees C at 0 degrees to 30O degrees C while
PYREX has a thermal expansion of .55 x 10/-6/ cm/cm/degrees C at O degrees
C to 300 degrees C.
Use the following epoxy and glass formations (made by Plastic Associates) in
the manner indicated: Mix 708/F resin 8 grams; 708/F catalyst 4 grams 7574
ground glass powder 20 grams Air dry for 1 hour at room temperature. Oven dry
at 200 degrees F for 2 hours.
The resulting structure was subjected to a helium leak test at 5.3 x 10/-10/
cc/sec, and no leak was observed.
The tube was plunged directly into a liquid nitrogen dewar while pumping on
the assembly, withdrawn, and retested again with no leaks.
Again, the same procedure was used but this time liquid nitrogen was
substituted with liquid helium. Again, the unit was leak-tested at 5.3 x 10/-10/
