Optical Testing of Parabolic Mirrors

A testing method for parabolic mirror surfaces is proposed which is based on geometrical optical principles. In the figure incident ray S of a light beam parallel to the optical axis is reflected from point P having an angular deviation epsilon from the ideal parabolic shape; hence, reflected ray S1 is deflected by 2epsilon from theoretical ray SO through focal point F. Lateral deviation is related to angular deviation epsilon according to the approximate formula: (Image Omitted) where zeta is the distance of point P from the optical axis, and r is the distance of point P from the focal point.
