In many interactive terminal applications, such as electronic funds transfer, and travel reservations and inquiry, the transaction data from a terminal must be sent to a remote computer having a large data base for processing. For various reasons, e.g., message transmission error, and communication line overload, the potential delay in receiving a response at the terminal may be substantial. In these long delay situations, it is often desirable to cancel the transaction entirely and either reenter the transaction or handle the transaction manually.
