Fig. 1 illustrates a top or plan view of a paper tensioner 1 positioned in front of an arcuate platen 2 to guide a sheet of paper 3 (seen on edge) to maintain contact between the paper 3 and platen 2. A number of spherical balls 4 are shown in retainer spaces 5 in the tensioner body structure 1. As seen in Fig. 2, a partial horizontal section through member 1 of Fig. 1, individual balls 4 bear against the paper 3 and pinch it between platen 2 and the ball. An angled guide surface 6 on retainer 5 is a portion of the tensioner body 1 and serves as an incline plane, causing a horizontal component of force, as shown in Fig. 3, to bear against the paper 3.
