A charge-coupled device (CCD) self-scanned photoarray running with a fixed speed shift-register clock to the output has a fixed, minimum time required to complete a shift-register output. In a scanning system where start/stop operation is required due to fluctuation in data compression rates or nonsynchronous motor drives, an integration control mechanism independent of the shift register sequence is required. Such a mechanism is known for use with single shift registers.
