In a data processing system in which various components contend for storage access through data ports, channel performance can be severely impacted. Since the channel operation is tied to a physical operation, such as disk rotation or tape movement, storage delay causes overruns. These overruns must be retried by either software or hardware, causing system throughput degradation.
