Certain magnetostrictive wires, which have a helical magnetic anisotropy
along the length of the wire, can be used to generate acoustic signals which then
travel along the wire.
Referring to the figure, the acoustic signals are generated by striking the wire 10. If the wire is struck by a charged electrode, then an electrical signal can be
generated simultaneously, and the relative differences in time delays between
the acoustic and electric signals is used to determine which of many such
electrodes in positions spaced along wire 10 struck wire 10. Thus a
