This article describes a gravity-return light weight air piston having near frictionless operation. This is achieved by using a long necked seal having a slightly tapered mouth that permits an air bearing to be created around the movable shaft of the piston, thus reducing friction in the piston while also reducing the volume of air required to drive the unit. This low-friction air bearing permits the shaft to be returned under its own weight in a dashpot manner.
