Described is a means of obtaining exclusive control (locks) of a direct-access storage device (DASD) (or data area on the DASD device) without the need to use the RESERVE/RELEASE features of the device. This has the advantage over the RESERVE/RELEASE technique that the path to a device string is available to other CPUs even though a specific device on the string is in exclusive control. Thus in a multiprocessor environment, the degree of parallel processing available to the total system configuration is increased.
