Present MOSFET (metal oxide semiconductor field-effect transistor) chips must be supplied with DC power for operation. Often the available power source is AC, and circuits external to the MOSFET chip are required to convert the AC to DC for use on the chip. The basic MOSFET production processes do not allow fabrication on the chip of diode bridges for conventional AC-to-DC conversion. It would be most desirable to make on-chip AC-to-DC conversions to avoid the use of external circuits in applications where the electronics package must be simple and small.
