In many copiers, the operator places the document to be copied on a transparent surface, the copying window, with the side to be copied facing down. If only a section is to be copied from a document of unusual size, the operator cannot determine whether the desired section is correctly aligned with the copying window previous to the copying process. The lamp for copying usually provides a scanning illumination and is not operable separate from the copying process.
