The magnetic surface of a flexible magnetic media is surface analyzed for defects prior to servo writing. The surface defects are located by use of a Surface Analysis Tester which writes continuous pulses at a high bit density from track to track across the disk, and measures the threshold of pulses subsequently derived by reading back from the tracks. The tester identifies degraded read pulses which could result from disk defects, and stores these as a data set associated with the disk under test as a coordinate array of points identified by track and rotational position with respect to an index mark on the disk.
