Abstract

Fig. 1 shows a disk drive unit for receiving an interchangeable cartridge containing a flexible recording disk and a stabilizing Bernoulli backing plate. The main components of the disk drive are a base casting 1 supporting a disk drive spindle 2 and a record/playback head actuator mechanism 3. The actuator mechanism is of the swinging arm type and consists of a support arm 4 mounted at one end for angular movement about an actuator spindle 5. A record/playback head 6 is supported at the other end of the arm and protrudes through a curved slot 7 in a bridge-like platform 8 attached to the base 1. The entire upper surface 9 of the platform 8 is machined to an accurate flat plane and ultimately forms part of the Bernoulli surface for the flexible disk 15 (shown dotted in Fig.
