An input/output (I/O) exception suppressing mechanism is provided which, when activated by a data processor, causes an I/O device attachment or control unit to not present an exception interrupt to the processor upon detection of various selected and prespecified device exception conditions. This mechanism enables the device control unit to perform an error recovery procedure or take other desired action on its own and without having to interrupt or disturb the program currently being executed in the processor.
