It is often desirable to have the ability to display characters in both the normal mode, including only those characters intended to be displayed and used by an operator, and a test mode, wherein all information in the data stream is presented. Where the data stream information is in the form of an undisplayable character, it is necessary to provide an identifying representation. This can take the form of any identifiable coded characterization, but is probably most useable if presented in the form of an eight-bit hexadecimal character that discloses the binary value of the data stream information at that character position.
