A tool of any hard material can be used to burnish a flat substrate by flying over the substrate to remove asperities. The tool can be mounted in a suspension system that allows it to glide above the surface of the substrate. The tool may be shaped according to the slider of U.S. Patent 3,823,416 with or without the center rail. The leading edge of the tool may be taper-flat profiled at the leading edge for flying characteristics. The leading edge of the tool will still shear asperities.
