Electrostatic pressure ink jet involves the supply of pressurized ink 10 to an ink jet head 11, which ejects an ink stream 12 that breaks into drops 14 at a distance from a nozzle 16 when perturbated by a drop generator 17. A charge electrode 18 selectively charges the drops on breakoff, which then enter a deflection field established by deflection plates 19, 20. The deflection field deflects the charged drops to the gutter 21, but does not affect the uncharged drops which go to the paper 22.
