Multiplexed Twisted Nematic Liquid Crystal Display with Wide View Angle
The liquid crystal display device shown in the drawing may be driven in a
multiplex fashion to provide high contrast and a wide-view angle.
The display device 10 has a back glass plate 12 and a front glass plate 14
which are separated by spacers 16A and 16B. Glass plates 12 and 14 are
coated with transparent electrodes 18A and 18B on their inner surfaces.
Alignment layers (not shown) are also applied to the inner glass plate surfaces.
Positioned between electrodes 18A and 18B is a layer 20 of twisted nematic
liquid crystal material.
A back polarizer 22 is positioned on the outer surface of back glass plate 12,
and a front polarizer 24 is positioned on the outer surface of front glass plate 14.
Positioned on the front polarizer 24 is a thin membrane screen 26 or,
alternatively, a finely ground glass screen.
This method achieves high contrast, fast response performance by using the
liquid crystal in a transmissive mode with a quasi-parallel (+5 degree) back
illumination means. A quasi-parallel light beam 28, at proper angle, is used to
probe the best image of the liquid crystal display panel. The high contrast
transmissive image at this point would have a narrow field of view, but this
transmissive image is contact projected onto the thin translucent membrane
screen 26 that is attached to the liquid crystal panel faceplate 24. The
