Abstract

A high reliability fixed message display using AC gas panel technology is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The display 10 has a single large area metallic electrode 12 positioned on glass layer 14. The metal electrode is coated on top with a layer 16 of a dielectric, for example MgO, as shown in Fig. 2. The top electrodes 18 A, B, C are message pads of transparent conductors which are positioned below glass layer 20. Each pad 18 A, B, C covers the area used by a single message. The top electrodes or pads 18 are coated underneath with a layer 22 of a dielectric. Gas chamber 24 is formed between the glass layers 14 and 20. On top of glass layer 20 is a message template 26 which defines the message to be displayed by the holes 28 therein and absorbs unwanted light coming both from the gas chamber 24 and from ambient illumination.
