Under the influence of an electric field, charge is effectively transferred between display electrodes of an electrochromic display. In such a display, the display effect is achieved by electrochemically depositing a colored species, derived from a colorless electrolyte, on a display electrode. It has been proposed to address a matrix of display electrodes by an array of electric switches, such as thin-film transistors, one switch to each electrode. The addressing system proposed here, in which each row of display electrodes behaves like a shift register, substantially decreases the number of drivers required.
