Interrupt Priority Decoder
Three-input, gated decoder modules, which find uses elsewhere in a data
processing system, can be used to generate priority interrupt signals more
efficiently than using nonfunctional random-logic modules.
As shown in the drawing, the gated decoder 1 accepts three adjacent request
signals plus a gating signal 2 which identifies whether a higher priority request
signal is on. The gated decoder outputs are combined into four signals, three of
which will be effective to set a trigger (Tn) associated with the highest priority
The 000 output indicates that the three input request signals are not on and
no additional higher priority requests are on. This signal is therefore used to help
form the gating signals for the next lower sets of three priority request signals.
The 001 output indicates that only the lowest priority (REQ 2) of the three
requests entering this decoder is on and no additional higher priority requests are
on. The 010 and 011 outputs are applied to OR circuit 3 to indicate that the
middle (REQ 1), but not the high, priority request of the three entering this
decoder is on and that no additional higher priority requests are on. The 100,
101, 110, and 111 outputs are applied to OR circuit 4 to indicate that the high
priority request (REQ 0) of the three entering this decoder is on and that no
additional higher-priority requests are on.
