Optical Scanning of Continuous Tone and Line Documents with Spatial Frequency Separation for Improved Data Handling and Compaction

The described scanning system provides separation of high and low spatial frequency components of image with binarization algorithms to utilize such separated information to define high-contrast sharp edges filled in with low resolution pseudo-halftone gray scale information. High and/or low frequency components may then be readily selected for facsimile transmission and/or data compaction. Compaction of separated data may be more effective than of combined data.
