Magnetic Offset Printing
This article describes a technique for repetitive printing of computer output
data which requires computer time only to form the pattern for the first copy to be
The computer output device shown above is based on the
principles of offset printing and magnetic ink mist printing. An
array of magnetic write heads 1 forms a magnetic pattern on a drum 2
as it rotates. This pattern is then developed by exposure to a mist
of magnetic ink droplets from reservoir 3. An electrostatic control
line 4 may be used to modulate the deposition of spurious images.
This ink-covered magnetic pattern or image is then transferred to an
offset roller 5 having associated wetting and cleaning rollers 6 and 7. As the offset roller 5 rotates further, it transfers the image
to paper 8. If a second copy of the image is desired, it is only
necessary to continue rotating drum 2 and roller 5. The magnetic
pattern remains unaltered for an indefinite number of cycles. When
it is desired to change to a different image, a signal is sent to a
demagnetizing strip 9 which effectively erases the magnetic pattern.
A new pattern can be placed onto the magnetic drum via the write
heads, as before.
This arrangement is particularly useful in certain industries, such as
publishing and printing, where computers are used to format data, but where
conventional printing techniques are customarily used to create the large number
of copies required.
