In order to maintain the specified access performance of a disk storage unit (DSU), it is necessary to calibrate the velocity control loop during a power-up sequence. If this calibration is not initiated, the related disk file control (DSF) will still seek but with reduced performance. Apparatus is described that relieves the user of the need to calibrate a DSU to insure specified access performance. This arrangement is useful, as an example, with the IBM Series/l computer systems.
