SmSe as an Optical Pressure Sensor

SmSe is a material which is known to undergo a second-order phase transition from the semiconductor to metallic state under the application of pressure. The evidence for this is based on published electrical measurements which show that the phase transition occurs continuously over a pressure range 0-45 kbar. Optical absorption measurements on thin films are in good agreement with the electrical measurements. It could be inferred from these published results that there would be dramatic changes expected in the bulk, visible reflectance properties of SmSe at pressures in excess of 30 kbar, but no such experiments have been done heretofore. Here, this material was subjected to pressures as high as 72 kbar. Changes were observed in the bulk optical reflectance properties of the material.
