Coupling for Multidimensional Axis Misalignment
This is a coupling to accommodate both planar and angular misalignment in
both directions of a reversible drive, which also operates with no overrunning.
Four cylindrical sides of link 10 engage the sides of the square hole in hub 3.
This allows link 10 to transmit torque to hub 3 which is connected to the driven
shaft. The four cylindrical sides on link 10 allow link 10 to gimbal about the axis
of hub 3 and allow for angular misalignment. Link 10 is driven by two drive pins 6
which are driven by a slot in shaft 9. Link 10 is allowed to pivot about drive pins
6, and drive pins 6 are allowed to slide in the slots in shaft 9. This allows link 10
to gimbal about the axis of shaft 9 and allows for angular misalignment. If the
axis of hub 3 and the axis of shaft 9 are transversely misaligned, there is the
appearance of angular misalignment between hub 3 and link 10. It also appears
as angular misalignment between shaft 9 and link 10. Since link 10 can
accommodate angular misalignment on both ends, the coupling can
accommodate both angular and transverse misalignment between hub 3 and
shaft 10, and is one of the unique features of this coupling.
Since power loss is a function of the work done within the coupling and work
is a function of force, friction and distance moved, the efficiency of this coupling
is a function of the sliding distance between link 10 and hub 3, plus the sliding
distance between link 10 and shaft 9....
