Overflow Processing Technique

This overflow processing technique may be used to minimize data storage requirements in an environment where processor and system demands prevent the use of adequate word length to contain worst-case data accumulations. This example involved a microprogrammed correlator that summed many input variables. Occasional overflows might occur, but the design could not justify increasing the word length of all correlator words or a great increase in the number of correlator words of storage.
