High voltage switch transistor second breakdown (S/B) can be prevented by limiting the maximum collector-emitter voltage to a value less than the critical S/B voltage, VCEX(S/B), defined in the IBM Technical Disclosure Bulletin 19, 1308-1309 (September 1976). This article describes a means to implement the S/B protection to shunt the current from the transistor whenever VCEX(S/B) is approached.
