A means of advancing ribbon using repeat no-print, no-escape printer cycles is achieved by the mechanism shown in the figure. An operator-controlled lever 1 is pivotally mounted to the left carrier side frame and moves lever 2 which disengages the ribbon lift/feed inhibit pawl 3 from the ribbon lift/feed ratchet 4. During normal operation, this pawl is released by link 5, acting through intermediate lever 6, which moves to the right only when a print velocity is selected. The inhibit pawl 3 and intermediate lever 6 are coupled together by spring 7 to act as a single unit during normal operation and as two pieces to allow manual disengagement of pawl 3 independent of member 6.
