In a typewriter where the ribbon feed is powered from the cyclical operation of the typewriter and where such functions as space, backspace and carrier return are also cyclical functions of the typewriter, it is desirable to inhibit the ribbon feed so that ribbon waste is held to a minimum. In a typewriter having a velocity-selection slider wherein the velocity selection is controlled by the position of the slider, at least one position of the slider will be such as to prevent printing by removing a link in the chain of events leading to printing. This is conventionally accomplished by removing a follower from engagement with the print cam by sliding it out from under the print cam, thereby disconnecting the mechanical chain.
