One Line LED Display
A single-line light-emitting diode (LED)-type display utilizes a horizontally
moving array to reduce the number of LED devices and to provide multicolor
LED display 11 includes a mounting board 13 having vertical arrays 15 of
LEDs, the vertical arrays being spaced a distance X. Crank 17 is attached to the
mounting board 13 by steel tape 19. Steel tape 21 is connected to a spring 23
which in turn is connected to ground.
As the crank 17 rotates, the mounting board 13 is caused to translate
horizontally by a distance X. Emitter holes 25 on the crank provide
synchronization signals to electronics (not shown) to control the turn-on and turn-
off of the LED arrays in accordance with their horizontal position. Rapid motion
of the board 13 provides the appearance of a continuous display. An additional
array of diodes 27 of a second color facilitates multicolor displays of characters
and the like, and in this manner special emphasis may be placed upon certain
