An XYZ table 2 is controlled by a processor 3 to move a subject 4 to a preselected position. As an example, the subject is a mechanical part that has a hole 5 that is to be located at a precise position for a manufacturing operation. A laser interferometer 1 senses the position of the XYZ table and transmits this position information to the processor. This information fully identifies the location of any fixed point on the subject.
