When using run length limited (RLL) codes for processing binary data, in which the length of the word to be encoded or decoded varies for different data patterns. For each successive word in a sequence, a decision must be made as to the number of bits in the word, then the word is framed, and a defined number of bits is encoded or decoded. One species of RLL code is the (2, 7) data code, such as described in U.S. Patent 3,689,899.
