An important part of any optical scanning/detector device is the means by which the initially analog data is converted to some digital collection of ones and zeros for further processing and storage. This conversion function is almost always performed by a separate functional element, which is often fairly expensive. Described below is a means for implementing that function directly on a charge-coupled device (CCD) chip, with apparent benefits in both cost and function.
