Absolute position is determined using relative position sensors on a computerized manipulator. Physical position of moving members of machine tools and manipulators is sensed with absolute or relative position encoders. Absolute position encoders translate physical displacement into an analog voltage or digital number that is directly proportional to the displacement. Relative position encoders generate a digital pulse for an increment of displacement; however, commercially available relative encoders will not sense absolute position.
