Detecting Short Circuits in Multilayer Printed Circuit Boards
The device shown above is used for detecting the location of a short circuit
between two networks in a printed-circuit board having a plurality of internal
The device comprises a thin liquid layer sandwiched between a very thin
nonmagnetizable metallic sheet 1, fixed on a frame 2, and a transparent
plexiglass sheet 3. The liquid layer contains a magnetizable powder.
Multilayer printed-circuit board 4 to be tested is positioned below sheet 1.
Current generator 5 is connected between two metallized holes A and B of two
different networks on board 4.
The electromagnetic field generated by the current flowing in the networks
polarizes the magnetizable particles in the liquid in such a way that a plot of the
circuit in which the current flows is drawn.
By examining this plot, a short circuit can be easily localized. This short
circuit can be repaired by mechanical means if it is located on an external plan or
by providing a current flash through metallized holes selected to avoid damaging
a long portion of one of the networks involved in the short circuit.
