The plasma chromatograph/mass spectrometer (PC/MS) has been used in recent years for detecting subpicogram (10/-12/g) quantities of both organic and inorganic compounds. The basis of its use is the formation of both positive and negative ions at atmospheric pressure as a result of a series of charge exchange reactions initiated by B/-/ rays emitted from a 63 Ni foil. The ionization process is very similar to chemical ionization mass spectroscopy.
