Adaptive Allowance of Break In

This article concerns a system for adaptively, on a cycle-by-cycle basis, admitting microprogram interruptions ("break-ins") relative to a microprogram control store shared by multiple data processing units operating on a relatively asynchronous basis (e.g., multiple microprogrammed input/output channels of a data processing system). In certain systems of this type, break-in is allowed or disallowed in each cycle of microinstruction execution on an absolute basis. Break-in is disallowed when it is desired to maintain continuity of operation relative to the unit currently being served by the control store, and it is allowed when such continuity is not required.
