A variable transmission element positioned in the laser's optical cavity
stabilizes the output intensity of a laser.
As shown in the drawing, the lasing medium 12 is positioned next to the
mirror 14. The variable transmission element includes a transparent prism 16
separated by a gap 18 from a metal surface 20 which is positioned on top of a
driver 22. The driver 22 is connected to control electronics 24, which in turn is
connected to a photodetector 26 which monitors the output from the beam splitter 28. The output mirror 30 is located between the prism 16 and the beam splitter 28.
Light from the laser 12, which is polarized in the plane of incidence, strikes
the prism 16 such that the angle of incidence on the base of the prism 16 is
greater than the prism/air critical angle. The reflectivity depends on the angle of
incidence and the size of the gap 18. The gap 18 is mechanically adjusted by
the driver 22 in response to the light intensity. This variable transmission
element varies the cavity Q and hence the output intensity of the laser from zero
to virtually 100%.
