Cursor Selection of a Segment within a Bounded Area on an Electronic Display Surface

In order to select a target segment within a bounded area on an electronic display surface, such as a cathode ray tube, with electronic cursors movable only within the surface, it has been necessary to lay out segments on the display surface only in one dimension so that cursors moving along the viewing surface could reach any target segment from outside the bounded area without crossing through any intermediate segments. This is shown in Fig. 1 for a one-dimensional menu. Any point on the viewing surface is described by its Cartesian x,y coordinates.
