A single-pole single-throw fiber-optic switch may be made by axially aligning
two fibers with a gap therebetween and selectively occluding the optical path with
The occluding material may be a piece of springy copper wire 10 (Fig. 1)
which is forced into position 12 (Fig. 2) between the input fiber 14 and output
fiber 16 by passing a current through it in the presence of a magnetic field. The
wire reflexes to a position 18 out of the gap when the current is removed.
The switch may be modified to provide a tap by positioning another optical
fiber 20 (Fig. 3) adjacent to fiber 14 so as to receive light reflected from the wire 10. Fiber 20 should have a high numerical aperture, and may take the form of a
hollow fiber surrounding fiber 14 for efficient collection of the reflected light.
