Method of Obtaining a Chip Free Edge on Sapphire
This article describes an apparatus and method for placing a chip-free edge
on a sapphire blade which is suitable for cleaning a magnetic media.
The apparatus comprises a lapping plate (Figs. 1A and 1C) upon which a
pattern of circular grooves is positioned. The lapping plate comprises a steel
substrate upon which a lapping surface comprised of tin and lead is placed. A
marking tool, having characteristics substantially equivalent to that shown in Fig.
1B, is attached to a milling machine (not shown). By selecting a proper radius
and positioning the cutting edge of the tool to be in contact with the lapping plate,
a plurality of grooves are generated on the surface of the lapping plate.
Fig. 1C is an expanded view which shows the relationship between two
adjacent grooves and the approximate depth of the grooves. The distance X is
approximately 0.77 inch, while the distance Y is approximately .002 inch.
After preparing the lapping plate, as shown in Fig. 1A and Fig. 1B, the
sapphire blades are bonded to steel plates, as shown in Fig. 2A and Fig. 2B.
The lapping plate is then loaded with diamond particles suspended in a solution
of water and ethylene glycol. The steel plates, with the attached sapphire
workpiece, are then attached to a random motion polisher (not shown). Next, the
