Ultrasonic or acoustic imaging systems (AIS) are sometimes used for nondestructive testing and inspection of specimens, for example, sealed circuit modules and the like. High resolution acoustic imaging demands that precise positioning of the transducer focal point, with respect to the part undergoing inspection, be adjustable and maintained to within a fraction of a wavelength at the operating frequency. This support system 10 provides precision adjustment of the Z axis without stopping the imaging operation and/or XY planar alignment between the specimen and the transducer. It also allows relative movement between the specimen and transducer along the Z axis without disturbing the alignment.
