In a dot matrix printer a cylinder platen 10 has plural longitudinal ridges 11 uniformly spaced around its periphery. Ridges 11 are horizontal with the print line and parallel with the rotational axis 12 of the platen 10. A record medium 13 is disposed between platen 10 and a hammer unit mounted on a carrier 14 movable along the print line by a lead screw 15. The hammer unit comprises a flexible hammer element 16 with a vertical print bar 17 which strikes record medium 13 against ridges 11 to form dots. The hammer element 16 and a no-work electromagnet 18 are supported by a bracket 19 pivotally supported on carrier 14. The hammer unit is slanted relative to the vertical to compensate for relative longitudinal movement between carrier 14 and platen 10.
