Low Cost Raster Printer

A synergistic combination for low-cost raster printing would be:

1. A modulated laser - Model ML-382 made by Metrologic Instruments, Inc. (can be modulated up to 100% at rates up to 100KHz by a 0 to 5 volts modulating signal; has 1 milliwatt output - TEM 00 mode).

2. Focusing optics to focus laser to spot of desired size at desired distance (TEM 00 mode focuses to a fine resolution spot).

3. Galvanometer mounted mirror to scan focussed laser spot over line.

a) Galvanometer: General scanning, Inc. Galvanometer Model G-124 (will sweep at 92 Hz to cover 11 inch page at 250 lines per inch; page scan time of 30 sec.).

b) Galvanometer Drive: General scanning, Inc. Ramp Driver Model RDX-100 (reduced oscillation and overshoot permits fast retrace).

c) Line start detector to synch laser input with galvanometer position.

4. Sensitive Paper: 3M Corporation - Type 777R, (red sensitive).

5. Paper transport for page scanning (synchronized with galvanometer drive).

6. Metering and developing (roller and heated shell) system.
