Abstract
Containers for the liquid phase epitaxial growth of garnet films from PbO:B(2)O(3) fluxes have been made from noble metals, primarily Pt and its alloys. It is proposed that the Pt crucibles be replaced by sintered orthoferrite crucibles. The rare-earth ions in the orthoferrite should be the same as those in garnet which is being grown.
Sintered Orthoferrite Crucible
Containers for the liquid phase epitaxial growth of garnet films from PbO:B(2)O(3) fluxes have been made from noble metals, primarily Pt and its alloys. It is proposed that the Pt crucibles be replaced by sintered orthoferrite crucibles. The rare-earth ions in the orthoferrite should be the same as those in garnet which is being grown.
It was expected that the orthoferrite phase would dissolye, i.e., resorption, by a peritectic reaction: liquid + orthoferrite <-- garnets. However, resorption of the orthoferrite phase was not observed, when a solution containing orthoferrites was cooled in the region where garnets are normally grown. The solution was maintained in the garnet region for up to several weeks and no reaction between the orthoferrite phase and the liquid was observed.
Crucibles can easily be fabricated from prereacted orthoferrite powders by standard ceramic techniques.
