Read Write Read with DC Flux

This is a head construction for a flux-gated read-write magnetic head.

This head construction includes a core having three spaced vertical legs 1 2 and 3. These are connected by spaced horizontal elements 4 and 5. A read- write gap formed between extensions of the legs 1 and 3. A read-write winding is wound on leg 2. Control windings I1 and I2 are threaded through holes a, b and c, d in elements 4 and 5 of the core.

A control current applied to one of the control windings saturates the core material surrounding the holes through which the winding is threaded. Thus, DC flux is blocked from the read-write coil. The core construction provides two alternate paths for the flux between the coil and the gap. Either path can be blocked by current applied to one control coil or the other. Thus, the direction of DC flux through the recording gap can be selected in the first instance and then changed as desired by switching current to the other control coil.
