Transfer End Effector for Large Carpet Sections for Vehicle Insertion

The insertion of large and heavy carpet sections into vehicles is labor intensive and difficult.  Current practice is to manually acquire the carpet section from a pallet.  Carry it to the vehicle and place it inside the vehicle in the correct orientation, unfold it, locate it, and secure it.  The carpet is large, heavy and hard to manage.  The folded section must be inserted through a door or trunk opening and then unfolded and located.  All phases of the insertion are manual and require excessive walking, lifting, and bending. 


 Our solution is to develop an end effector (see attached drawing) to address the carpet acquisition, transfer of the carpet section, and vehicle insertion. The end effector would be affixed to a robot or other manual or semi-manual lift assist device. It would consist of a series of linked elements. These elements would be connected by shafts, much the way a door hinge connects the two sections of the hinge. This would allow the two sections to move relative to each other. At one shaft end there exists a cog belt sprocket. The sprocket is affixed to one section. There would also exist a rotary actuator (RA) affixed to one section. The RA has a cog belt sprocket affixed to it. As the RA functions the end section would move relative to the other sections in the same manner as the closing of a door hinge. Sprocket locations, RA locations, and subsequent relative movements are shown in the accompanying figures. At the ends of the outboard sections there exists gripping elements. These gripping elements consist of needle-like details that extend out of a safety/release device. T...
